A CLOSER LOOK

Notes from the landscapes, craft and everyday life of southern Morocco.

Look closely at a wall

At Aït Ben Haddou, the relationship between material and landscape is visible before you enter the ksar. Earth, timber and the repeated geometry of towers make a settlement that reads as part of its setting.

A collective place

UNESCO describes a grouping of houses and shared spaces inside defensive walls. Calling the whole place a palace misses that collective character. Its World Heritage inscription dates to 1987.

A living responsibility

Earthen buildings need continuing care. Visit with an understanding that repair, access restrictions and the work of residents and conservators are part of the story. A photograph records a moment; maintenance allows the next one.
